Karaoke provides extremely entertaining nights out, whether you or someone you know is belting “Don’t Stop Believin’” or anything else from the club’s songbook. Here, learn about the history of this favorite pastime if you are new to singing tunes or a longtime fan who wants to learn more. You’ll absorb tidbits you can share at your next singalong.

How Did Karaoke Begin?

Origins

In 1971, a Japanese drummer named Daisuke Inoue invented a machine designed to help him at gigs. Musical entertainment was a common party component in Japan for years, inspiring Inoue to craft a machine that recorded his drumming so his clients could sing along to songs on corporate vacations. He perfected his tape recorder so it played the instrumental parts of songs and began leasing his devices to stores so they didn’t have to purchase new melodies and equipment.

karaokeDespite his leasing success, Inoue did not patent his machine, which was further developed by a Filipino inventor named Roberto del Rosario in 1975. Rosario obtained a patent for his machine in 1980, originally dubbed “Minus-One.” However, a Japanese company claimed to invent what is now known as the karaoke machine, resulting in a court battle that was finally resolved in 1986.

Karaoke Today

By the 1990s, karaoke was an internationally-recognized activity, having swept across the rest of Asia as well as the United States, Australia, Europe, and Canada. And while in-home versions of the famous machine failed to pique public interest, those designed to enhance viewing sessions in home theaters enjoyed success.

Today, the machines can be found in bars, clubs, and other establishments around the world, encouraging everyone to release their inhibitions and feel the beat of the rhythm of the night, keep rockin’ in the free world, and look for nothing but a good time.
