The concept of allowing someone else to share their toy, snack, or book may be foreign to some younger kids. Teaching a child why sharing is beneficial early on will help them be prepared when it’s time to interact with other children at preschool. Below, learn what you need to know to make the lessons fun and age-relatable.

Why Sharing Is Important

Sharing sets the foundation for teaching your child about compassion, empathy, and service to others. Kids start to understand that allowing someone else to enjoy some of their favorite items can help build friendships and loving connections.

Sharing also helps children to interact with others who they may not normally come into contact with, including those from different cultural, racial, and economic backgrounds. When they’re ready to enter preschool and see the diversity of students there, playing together won’t be so awkward for them.

How to Instill the Values of Sharing

preschoolOne of the best ways that parents and guardians can teach their little ones to share is through modeled behavior. Let your children see you sharing a bowl of ice cream with a spouse or older child. Play games with them that emphasize turn-taking and sharing crayons, blocks, and other toys. Talk through these situations as they occur with the emphasis on how easy and fun it is to enjoy favorite experiences together.

To get kids ready for preschool, set up play-dates, and observe sharing incidents. Offer lots of praise when you see it happening. Ask your child which toys they would like to bring to the park for others to share. If you see your child playing alone with their favorite toy, ask them to share with the child closest to them. If they have had their turn on the swing, encourage your child to give another peer a chance. The key is to frequently acknowledge their caring attitude and praise them for being so loving and friendly.
