Maintaining your computer’s software is important for optimal performance, but your hardware – the physical components of your computer – needs regular attention as well. You can keep your hardware in excellent shape by regularly cleaning your computer inside and out. This guide covers the basics of cleaning computers

How Can You Maintain Your Computer With Cleaning?

1. Eliminate Dust on Fans

Computers often rely on interior fans to stay cool. Over time, dust may settle on fan blades and reduce the effectiveness of the fans. To dust off the blades, use a can of compressed air and gently stop the fan from spinning with your finger. Carefully blow off debris that has accumulated on the fan. Don’t apply too much direct pressure to the blades since they’re delicate. If compressed air isn’t effective at removing built-up dust, use a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol to wipe down the fan.

2. Clean Exterior Surfaces

computersExterior computer parts like your keyboard, monitor, and mouse need to be cleaned and sanitized often, especially if multiple people are using the same pieces of hardware. Use a mild solution, such as ammonia mixed with water, to wipe down your mouse and keyboard. If your monitor is dusty or covered in streaks from oils, cleanse the glass with streak-free glass cleaner. Sanitize these surfaces often on shared computers to reduce the spread of germs in your home or at work.

3. Remove Thermal Grease

Thermal grease can build up on your computer’s processor and heat sink. This grease is important for helping your computer run smoothly and safely, but its effectiveness wears off with age. Remove old thermal grease by using a lint-free cloth dipped in concentrated alcohol. Gently separate the heat sink from the processor, wipe off the thermal grease, and apply new thermal grease to the same areas once they’re clean and dry. You can also find thermal grease removal products that are made for cleaning computers.
