Allergens are virtually unavoidable when you go outside, but that doesn’t mean you have to give them free rein in your home, too. By taking a few steps to optimize and maintain your air conditioning system, you can reduce the presence of allergens, ensuring your home remains a safe haven from mold, pollen, and other irritants.

How to Reduce Allergens With Your HVAC System

1. Install an Air Purifier

If anyone in your home has allergies, asthma, or some other respiratory condition, purchasing an air purifier will be a sound investment. These appliances, which work in conjunction with the rest of the HVAC system or stand alone in a single space, can effectively eliminate allergens that are generated inside the home and therefore bypass the air filter.

2. Use a High-Quality Filter

Additionally, it’s wise to upgrade to a HEPA model. High-efficiency particulate air filters can trap dust mites, dirt, pollen, pet dander, mold, mildew, and other contaminants more efficiently than standard models.

3. Clean the Ducts

Unless you happen to have a ductless air conditioning system, be sure to clean the ducts about once a year. Because filters aren’t 100% foolproof, allergens can make their way into the ducts, where they accumulate over time. For optimal air quality, have a technician clean the components of your air conditioner and furnace as well.

Your air conditioning system will only combat allergens if it’s well-maintained.
