Whether you need an implant for a lost tooth or a wisdom tooth extraction, your dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon who specializes in these services. If it’s your first time having such a procedure, it’s natural to feel nervous. To feel more confident about your surgery, ask your surgeon these questions.

4 Questions to Ask Your Oral Surgeon

Will it hurt?

If you’re worried about the pain involved in your oral surgery, don’t hesitate to let your surgeon know. They likely have years of experience helping patients feel more comfortable with the process.

For example, they can explain the sensation in relation to more common dental treatments, such as teeth cleanings or cavity fillings. They can also use this opportunity to discuss anesthesia options. While the procedure may only call for a local numbing agent, a surgeon may offer general anesthesia or anti-anxiety medication for patients who are feeling apprehensive.

How should I prepare?

oral surgeonYou’ll likely need to make arrangements for the day of your oral surgery. For example, the medication used during the procedure may make it unsafe to drive, so you’ll need a friend or family member to pick you up. If you’ll experience soreness or drowsiness after the treatment, your surgeon may recommend you call out of work for the day or make arrangements for child care.

Do I need to modify my diet or medications?

Sometimes, oral surgeons will ask their patients to avoid specific prescriptions a few days or hours before the appointment, such as those that thin the blood and prevent proper clotting. Or if you’ll be taking general anesthesia, you may be asked to fast for eight to 12 hours before the surgery.

Also, ask your surgeon about your recovery protocol. They may recommend sticking to soft foods like soups and smoothies and taking a prescribed pain killer instead of an over-the-counter remedy.

How long will my recovery take?

Depending on the procedure you’re having, your recovery time may vary. Younger patients having their wisdom teeth removed might be ready to resume their normal schedule in the next 24 to 48 hours. However, an older patient receiving a dental implant will need to rest for around 96 hours, and they can expect swelling and soreness for up to 10 days. Therefore, it’s important to talk to your oral surgeon about your specific treatment and the healing process that follows.
