In addition to federal laws, each state has its own regulations on the sale of illicit drugs. In Alabama, a judge considers where a drug is sold, who it's sold to, and the amount that's sold during the sentencing phase. For a better idea of what strategy to discuss with a defense attorney, here's a brief guide to consequences for selling drugs in Alabama.

Selling Drugs

Selling any amount of any controlled substance to an adult is a Class B felony in Alabama. A conviction comes with a mandatory minimum of two years and a maximum of 20 years' incarceration. The defendant will also have to pay up to $30,000 in fines.

They could also owe the court up to $60,000 in fines. Selling drugs within three miles of a school also comes with an automatic five-year prison sentence.

Trafficking Drugs

A person will face a drug trafficking conviction for selling at least 2.2 pounds of marijuana. Selling up to 100 pounds comes with a three-year prison term. Depending on the circumstances, they could get up to life in prison and owe up to $25,000 in fines. The sentence is extended to a minimum of five years and a fine up to $50,000, for trafficking between 100 and 500 pounds of cannabis. Finally, a person could spend at least 15 years behind bars for selling between 500 and 1,000 pounds and owe up to $200,000 in penalties.
