A traditional asphalt roof has a life span of approximately two decades. Towards the end of that time, you should arrange for a new roof installation to protect your home's value and structure. Since this is a large project, prepare for the arrival of your roofing contractor by doing the following.

How to Make Your House Ready for a New Roof

1. Clear the Driveway & Yard

Your roofing contractor will need space to load and unload their materials. Therefore, make sure they have access to a nearby parking space. They will also need a clear path to the roof. Once up there, they will toss debris down to the ground. To protect your lawn items, move grills and patio furniture elsewhere. You should also cover up any flower beds with tarps so that they aren't sprinkled with dust. It also helps to mow the lawn before your contractor's arrival. This way, any nails or other tools that inadvertently wind up in the grass can be easily spotted.

2. Schedule Tree Trimming

Have them trimmed before installation. An arborist can safely remove large or diseased limbs. It’s also helpful to cut landscaping around your home so contractors can easily set and climb ladders against the siding.

3. Clear the Attic & Walls

Roofers may need to remove the decking beneath your shingles and will expose items stored in the attic. It’s best to move any belongings you have there to the garage or a self-storage unit during construction so that they aren’t damaged. Alternatively, throw a tarp over them to prevent them from gathering dust.

Roof installation can send vibrations through your home as well. Take down paintings or mirrors you have affixed to the walls to prevent them from falling.
