Modern dentures are incredibly realistic and can help anyone suffering from significant tooth loss to restore their looks and biting ability. However, like any other dental addition or appliance, prosthetic teeth need ongoing care. Here are a few important tips to follow regarding denture maintenance.

Do:

Wear your dentures daily.

While it can be tempting to skip a day or two of wearing your dentures, realize that they can take some getting used to, although you’ll feel more comfortable over time. Studies have shown that it takes about 30 days to get used to wearing dentures, so don’t give up early. If they don’t seem to be fitting well or you are struggling to chew or talk with them in, schedule a follow-up appointment with your dentist to check the fit.

Rinse dentures after eating.

Since dentures are made to pressure fit to your gums, keep your mouth as clean as possible. After you eat, remove your dentures temporarily to rinse them with clean water. If a private restroom isn’t available to take care of this task, swishing your mouth with clean water can help.

Don’t:

Use abrasive toothpaste.

denturesMany kinds of toothpaste contain fine abrasives that are made to polish away surface stains. Unfortunately, some aren’t appropriate for denture wearers, since it can dull or scratch the surface of the prosthetic teeth. Only use toothpaste designed for dentures, and ask your dentist for a recommendation if you aren’t sure what to start with.

Let them dry out.

Dentures are made to stay within the moist environment inside your mouth. If they dry out, they could warp or crack and may need to be replaced. At night, brush and floss your dentures, and then soak them overnight in a denture sanitizing solution or clean water.
