Once you have a baby—or when you have one on the way—you are likely to start noticing that your home has more than a few hazards. When your child starts to walk, you’re going to spend a lot of time redirecting them away from cabinets and drawers that may contain harmful objects. At the very least, keeping them from pulling out the contents and tossing them around the room can test your patience. Keeping curious little ones out of harm’s way is easier, though, when you take time to childproof.

How to Make Cabinets Safer for Your Kids

1. Relocate Harmful Items

Keeping cleaning supplies and chemicals under the sink when only adults live in your home is no problem. Once you have children, though, keeping those products out of little hands is a must. Relocating poisonous products to a higher, out-of-reach cabinet is a good place to start. Other objects to store out of reach include plastic bags, batteries, and small appliances with cords.

2. Secure Cabinets With Childproof Devices

cabinetsEven when cabinets don’t contain anything dangerous, they can still be tempting to small children. It’s easy for little fingers to get pinched, possibly causing serious injury. Securing the doors using childproofing devices can keep your baby from harm. There are different options to choose from, including latches, sliding locks, magnetic locks, and adjustable locks. Some, like latches, are more involved than others to install, but all of them can keep your baby out of harm’s way.

3. Install Bumpers

Even if they can’t get into the cabinets, little ones who aren’t quite steady on their feet can still get hurt when they bump into cabinet knobs. Covering the knobs with something soft, like a piece of padded fabric, can prevent bumps and bruises from the knobs and handles. Adding bumpers to corners can also prevent injuries to toddlers who are likely to run into them.
