It can be frustrating to be in the middle of an activity only to have the circuit breaker flip and knock out the power. However, the breaker just protected your plugs and appliances from an electricity overload, which could have fried the electrical wiring and started a fire. Use these frequently asked questions to get informed about the breaker’s basic functions and why it might be flipping.

4 Common Questions Electricians Are Asked About Circuit Breakers

What is a circuit?

A circuit is a closed-loop path that allows electrons to travel. When the circuit is open or incomplete, the electrons will come to a halt.

What does a circuit breaker do?

The electrical service panel box inside your home consists of several lever-operated circuit breakers. Each protects a specific circuit, which houses electrical wiring connecting one or more outlets, somewhere in the property.

electrical wiringThe box uses an electromagnetic strip to detect dangerous currents that can lead to overloads or short circuits. When they’re detected, the affected breakers will “flip,” opening the loop and breaking the circuits’ access to electricity.

Where is my circuit breaker located?

Every home is different, but the circuit breaker will usually be located in low-traffic areas like the basement, garage, laundry room, or utility closet. If you have an older home, the breaker box might be on an exterior wall. Look for a metal box or just a door if the panel has been installed in a recessed area.

What do I do if the breakers aren’t labeled?

First, make a basic floor plan of your entire property, noting where lights and outlets are located. Then turn on all of the lights and start flipping the breakers one by one to determine what they control.

Assign each breaker a number, and add it to every corresponding plug and light on your map. The next time you need to turn off power to a specific area, you can do so quickly. Also, if a breaker repeatedly flips, you can check all connected outlets to determine if one or more is being overloaded.
