Homes require a lot of maintenance during the fall season. In addition to cleaning your gutters and sealing gaps in your windows and doors, it’s important to take care of your HVAC system. Doing so will help you avoid emergency HVAC repairs in the cooler months. Here’s how to make sure your system runs smoothly all season.

How to Take Care of Your HVAC System During the Fall

1. Replace Air Filters

Replacing air filters will help your HVAC system run efficiently during the colder months and maintain a healthy indoor air quality. Ideally, you want to change these filters at least every three months. If you have pets or allergies, you may have to replace them more frequently.

2. Clean the Outdoor Unit

Leaves, branches, and other debris can accumulate in your outdoor HVAC unit and block airflow to your system, forcing it to work harder. To prevent emergency HVAC repairs, periodically check the outdoor unit for debris and remove it immediately. If the debris is too difficult to remove by hand, use a hose.

3. Remove Obstructions From Registers

If there’s furniture or other items in front of your registers, move them out of the way. Any obstructions can prevent your system from dispersing warm air evenly throughout your home. The system will also have work harder than it needs to, which will raise your bills.

4. Schedule an Inspection

They’ll check the various components for problems you may have missed and repair them accordingly. Waiting too long to fix minor issues could result in expensive HVAC repairs in the future.
