Taking the SAT is a key moment in your academic career. This difficult test can be the first step toward college, but if you’re unprepared, it could also be especially challenging. Many students struggle with the math section each year. Luckily, with dedicated test prep, you can master the concepts likely to appear on the test. Here are a few strategies you can use to improve your math score.

4 Test Prep Tips for SAT Math

1. Manage Your Time

The test is designed to ask a few especially difficult questions. If you find that you’re stumped, hazard your best guess, mark the question in your booklet, and move on to the next one. You can return if time allows.

The key is to avoid getting stuck on a single question and spending too much time on it. This can throw you off as you continue with the following questions. Instead, do what you know, then focus on the harder questions.

2. Try Back-Solving

If you understand the basic concept of the question and have a relative idea of the formula needed, then you may be able to arrive at the correct answer this way.

3. Time Yourself

It’s important to complete the test in its entirety to do as well as possible. Time yourself as you take practice exams. By replicating the conditions of the real test, you can determine the areas where you need more work and develop a course of action so that you can approach the SAT with confidence.

As a general rule, aim to spend approximately a minute to two minutes on each question.

4. Visualize Your Work

Always use whatever method possible to arrive at the right answer. You don’t need to solve everything in your mind; you can draw a diagram if it helps you understand the question more clearly. If a diagram is already included, label it as you start solving the question to help guide you to the right answer.
