Lawn care is an important maintenance step for your property, ensuring that grass is healthy and the landscape looks lush and green. Simply running your lawn mower over the grass when it is too low will trim the blades, but cutting it too low can lead to weed growth and stress from too much heat and light exposure. Below is a guide to follow next time you trim the grass.

What Is the Ideal Height for Grass?

For cooler seasons like the fall, two and a half inches is a good height. Your lawn mower should remove the top third of the blades to stimulate growth while avoiding scalping, which is when the grass is too short and vulnerable to weeds and stress.

In the warmer months, crabgrass may be a concern, making three inches a better measurement for your lawn. The extra height provides additional shade, which keeps weeds from getting unruly. In the cold months, frost kills crabgrass, making it less of a concern.

How Do You Mow to the Correct Height?

lawn mowerTo ensure you are trimming at the right height, run your lawn mower when the grass is 3 2/3 inches high. An easy way to measure that is to draw a line on the mower’s tire at that height and an arrow indicating up or down to help you keep track of the wheel direction.

Depending on the lawn care equipment you have, you may need to test a few tire adjustment settings to achieve the right height. Mark the slot when you have it down. The owner’s manual can also help you figure out the best height to raise or lower the mower accordingly. Also, ensure you have sharp blades for a clean finish.

As for timing, take into account the season and your area’s rainfall. Mowing every couple of days or every other week may not be accurate enough for getting the right height. Precipitation will impact how fast your grass grows, so it’s better to measure and mow when the height is right.
