While braces are a highly effective method for straightening your child's teeth, they are sometimes uncomfortable, especially after they've been tightened. Although tightening is a necessary step to ensure proper alignment, the extra pulling can cause soreness for a few days after the procedure. Fortunately, there are a variety of methods you can apply to relieve discomfort. Use the guide below to learn about several pain relief methods.

3 Tips to Curb Pain From Braces

1. Try Over-the-Counter Pain Medications

One of the easiest and most effective ways to relieve pain after dental work is by taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. In most cases, your child can take these before their appointment to ease discomfort before it begins. Check with your child's dentist to ensure proper dosage, and to confirm that these medications won't interact with any scheduled procedures.

2. Use an Ice Pack

Fill an ice pack or wrap a zip-close bag with ice cubes inside a towel or washcloth and instruct your child to hold it against the outside of their mouth, adjusting the location as needed. If you don't have an ice pack, you can also use a bag of frozen fruit or vegetables.

3. Apply Oral Analgesic Gels

Benzocaine is a common pain reliever that is available in both liquid and gel form. It is safe for children, and the gel can be applied to the teeth and gums to provide mild numbing and relief from discomfort.

While older children and teens can apply the medication themselves using a cotton swab or their finger, younger children should be assisted to ensure they don't accidentally ingest more than the recommended amount. Always read the instructions on the packaging before use.
