The air conditioning unit that keeps your home comfortable throughout the warmer months is a complex machine. If one part is malfunctioning, it can affect the entire unit. This interdependence is partially why annual check-ups are so important; the sooner a problem is detected and repaired, the less likely it is to cause a more substantial issue. Learning more about a few principal parts and how they work will help you keep an eye out for anything amiss.

The Anatomy of an Air Conditioning Unit

1. Refrigerant

Air conditioning refrigerant, or coolant, essentially takes the heat from your home and releases it outside to create cooler air indoors. Coolant is cold as it flows through the coils in the air conditioning unit. It is then transformed from a liquid to a gas, absorbing heat in the process.

2. Condenser Coil

The condenser is what completes the heat transfer. It’s located in the outdoor unit and is responsible for releasing the warmth collected by the coolant. Because it’s outside, it is vulnerable to getting clogged with dirt, leaves, and twigs. At least once every season, clean the outdoor unit and trim back any nearby landscaping to prevent blockages.

3. Compressor

If something’s wrong with the compressor’s electrical wiring or there isn’t enough refrigerant, the system could fail.

4. Indoor Fan

The system also relies on an indoor fan. This part circulates the newly cooled air through the ductwork and around the house. If it feels like the fan isn’t pushing the air as well as it once did, you may have a clogged air filter.
