Plaster is a pretty and practical wall finish. Although its roots date back as far as the mid-17th century, it’s still used in modern buildings. A paste-like material composed of water, sand, and lime or gypsum, plaster can be used to coat walls and ceilings, and for ornamental decoration. Discover the advantages of plastering services below.

What Are the Benefits of Plastering?

1. Durability

When correctly mixed and applied, plaster creates a strong finish. Plaster is applied in its wet, pasty state. As it dries, water evaporates out of the mixture. In the case of gypsum plaster, this decrease in moisture causes gypsum crystals to form, bonding the plaster to the underlying surface. In the case of lime plaster, the chemical reaction that comes with drying creates a tightly woven matrix of calcite crystals.

2. Noise reduction

plastering servicesWhen a noise is made in a room, it’s carried through sound waves. These waves bounce off ceilings, walls, and floors, creating an echo effect. You may notice this in rooms with high ceilings, hard floors, and minimal furnishing, like museums. The echo is apparent because such spaces don’t have soft furniture, drapes, and carpets to absorb the sound waves and prevent bounce-back. Acoustical plaster absorbs waves and reduces echo effects. This is a thicker version of normal plaster, which makes it better able to absorb sound waves. It may also be perforated with holes, making it even more sound-absorbent. It’s often used in museums, galleries, libraries, performing arts centers, and high-end retail locations.

3. Stylization

Plaster is aesthetically versatile, offering a seemingly infinite selection of designs. Plaster moulds come in different colors, sizes, and designs, allowing you to style your space to suit your tastes. An expert craftsman can mold it for archways, ceiling domes, cornices, columns, and decorative ceilings. Certain brands of heat-resistant gypsum plasters can even be used to decorate the exterior of fireplaces. This is because gypsum contains calcium sulfate, which is noncombustible.
