Your AC unit helps the inside of your house feel like a retreat from the hot sun. However, after working overtime all summer, there is a chance of it malfunctioning—for example, by blowing warm air instead. The guide below looks at some potential causes of this issue.

Why Is My AC Not Cooling?

1. Thermostat Settings

Accidentally bumping the thermostat can cause it to have the incorrect temperature setting. Double-check that the fan is set to “auto.” If it is set to “on” instead, it will blow constantly—even if the AC unit isn’t cycling. Therefore, the air that comes out will feel warm.

2. Lost Power

AC unitYour AC unit is comprised of an indoor fan system and an outdoor condenser. A flipped circuit breaker or blown fuse can disable the outdoor system without affecting the fans. Since the outdoor unit is responsible for cooling the air, this means warm air will blow. Therefore, check your breaker box for signs that this is the case. If the air conditioner repeatedly trips the electrical system, contact an electrician since this might be indicative of additional, underlying issues.

3. Restricted Air Flow

An AC unit condenser operates through heat exchange. A dirty air filter or accumulated dust on the evaporator coils limits the amount of cold air it can create. The air filter should be checked once a month. Changing the filter regularly will help keep the coils clean, but they should still be dusted off annually. Due to the complexity of the system, this should be done by a trained professional.

4. Disconnected Return Duct

A broken or disconnected return duct will prevent cold air from reaching the vents. The air conditioner will still produce cold air, but it will escape the system too early. As a result, some areas of your home will be cool while others remain hot. A licensed HVAC repair person can check the ductwork for leaks.

5. Loss of Refrigerant

If the refrigerant coils spring a leak, the unit loses its ability to cool air. The broken coil will need to be replaced and the air conditioner recharged with fresh refrigerant. This fix will require a professional HVAC technician.
