When summer temperatures soar, getting into your vehicle is often unpleasant. However, the effects of the heat on your car extend well beyond the scalding seats and steering wheel. Everything from your fluids to your battery and tires can sustain heat-related damage, making summer vehicle maintenance just as important as winter service.

Common Heat-Related Car Problems

1. Tires

Checking the tire pressure at least once a month is essential, but especially so during the summer. As the air inside your tires warms up, it expands, which can lead to a blowout caused by overinflation. Inspect the rubber every time you check the pressure as well to ensure it's wearing evenly and still in good condition. When in doubt, have the wheels looked at by a professional and replaced as needed.

2. Battery

tireSnowy, cold winter days can keep your battery from working as it should, but so can warm weather. When temperatures increase, it changes the chemical process inside the battery, making it harder for the power source to hold a charge or produce power. Running the air conditioning nonstop doesn't help either, as it drains the battery charge. If you think your battery is failing, have the voltage checked by an auto tech, and replace it if necessary.

3. Fluids

Hot weather can wreak havoc on the fluids in your car. For example, a hot engine requires more lubricant than one running cooler, so regular oil changes are necessary.

Ensuring proper coolant levels is also vital to protecting your engine from high temperatures. Coolant, also known as antifreeze, keeps the engine from freezing during the winter and overheating in the summer. Low levels caused by a leak or damaged radiator can do irreparable damage, so have your auto technician check the coolant levels when they give you an oil change.
