Lawn care is a constant struggle for some homeowners, who feel like mowing, fertilizing, aerating, weed control, and pest control are part of a never-ending process. In fact, so averse are many people to bugs, that they are surprised to learn that some insects are actually beneficial to their turf. Below are some of the most common.

What Insects Benefit Your Lawn?

1. Parasitic Wasps

Various species of wasps lay eggs on or inside of other insects, like aphids and caterpillars, which themselves feed on turf. After the eggs hatch, the young wasps devour the host insect's fluids, organs, and other vitals. Eventually, the host weakens and dies. In this manner, parasitic wasps control the spread of pests that can harm your lawn and garden. You can purchase bee houses at many lawn and garden stores, and these are attractive to wasps, as well.

2. Ladybugs

Turf in Foristell, MOLadybugs, or ladybirds, are small beetles featuring bright red wing covers decorated with small black dots. They feast on aphids, which cause considerable damage to turf by feeding on grass. Aphids will suck the plant juice from grass blades and inject a toxin that destroys part of the blade around the feeding site before moving on, causing swaths of grass to yellow and die. A single ladybug may eat as many as 5,000 aphids during its lifetime. To encourage ladybugs, grow brightly colored flowers like calendulas and marigolds. Install a ladybug house, consisting of a small wooden box filled with chopped wood pieces. Leave damp paper towels nearby as a moisture source.

3. Aphid Midges

The aphid midge is a tiny, mosquito-like fly with dangling legs and prominent antennae. Its larvae are bright orange with strong jaws and make effective predators. They feed on more than 60 different species of aphid, so they are an invaluable addition to your yard. Grow pollen and nectar plants to attract them. Water the plants frequently to provide a moisture source, and protect the garden from heavy winds with a windbreak of trees or shrubs.
