Losing a loved one isn't easy in the best of times, but the COVID-19 pandemic has presented unique challenges when making funeral arrangements. Grieving families must now consider social distancing guidelines and the risk of spreading the disease when making choices to honor someone’s memory. Here’s what to know as you work with a funeral director:

How to Make Funeral Arrangements During COVID-19

1. Appoint a Healthy Family Member as Your Lead

When you call a funeral director to set an appointment, you may be asked if you feel ill or have been exposed to COVID-19. They might also ask you to limit the number of individuals who come to the funeral home when making arrangements.

2. Understand the Limits

A funeral director should inform you of local, state, and federal mandates and make recommendations based upon them. If your loved one passed away from COVID-19, expect extra precautions to be suggested. The funeral director will have the safety of your family and funeral home staff in mind.

You might also be advised to delay a funeral or hold a memorial service in the future. If so, don’t hesitate to ask questions or express your concerns about doing so.

3. Plan For Social Distancing & Face Coverings

The CDC encourages as little interaction as possible at all gatherings, no matter how intimate or small. Face coverings should be required for those who attend services, and seats for attendees not in the same household should be spaced at least six feet apart.

You should also avoid sharing religious books such as Bibles or hymnals during the service, and paper programs should be replaced with digital versions emailed to attendants. Keep in mind that outdoor or well-ventilated indoor areas offer lower risks of spreading COVID-19. If your community has high levels of the virus, consider holding virtual-only services.
