A clean windshield not only looks better, but it also helps you drive better. While properly cleaning auto glass can be a time-consuming job, it’s worth the safety of an unobstructed view and the presence of a vehicle that is taken care of. Here are some do’s and don’ts of windshield cleaning and maintenance.

Do:

Use the right products.

Many glass cleaners contain ammonia, which works well for most cleaning purposes but shouldn’t be used on auto glass. Ammonia releases dangerous fumes that can get trapped in the car and damage the interior and your health.

Ammonia can also harm the tint on some car windows, so it’s best to steer clear of the substance. Instead, stick to auto glass cleaners and wipe your windshield with a microfiber cloth, which is extremely soft and won’t leave scratches.

Fix damage immediately.

A small crack in your auto glasswindshield may not seem like a big deal at first, but the damage should be repaired right away. Cracks and scratches can spread on a windshield and turn minor inconveniences into costly repairs. Many insurance companies cover the costs of minor windshield repairs, so don’t hesitate to contact Hilltop Auto Glass to get yours fixed as soon as possible.

Don’t:

Use abrasive materials.

A material scratchier than a microfiber cloth has the potential to damage your car windshield. Fine steel wool can leave tiny scratch marks that can catch glares in the sun and make it dangerous to drive.

Service station squeegees and scrubbers are often too rough, damaged, or soaked in chemicals that can hurt your windshield. Even paper towels, which are made from wood pulp, can cause long-term scratch damage to your car windows.

Slam your doors.

A few instances won’t cause much harm, but consistently slamming your car’s doors can shake the windows and cause long-term damage. The window guiding channels can become loose, causing your windows to get stuck or even fall down into the door. Weakening the windows increases the risk of damage in the future, so be gentle when handling your doors.
