Clogged rain gutters are always a nuisance, but they also let water pour over the side of your roof, pool around the foundation, and eat away at your house’s structure. During the winter, backed-up water can also form ice dams, which force moisture underneath the shingles, eventually leading to widespread damage. To protect your home from the elements, clean your gutters at least twice per year.

5 Steps for Cleaning Your Rain Gutters

1. Choose a Safe Ladder

Before climbing a ladder, always make sure all of the feet are on solid ground and aren’t resting on rocks that could suddenly roll out from under you. Never climb higher than the second-to-highest rung, and use a stabilizer when using an extendable ladder that leans against the wall. Having a helper who can hold the ladder and pass tools also minimizes the risk of accidents.

2. Clear Out Debris

Most of the debris usually collects around downspouts, so they’re a good place to start. First, remove and clean the filter at the top of the downspout, then scoop out loose leaves and twigs. Compacted debris can be removed with a trowel or small plastic scoop.

3. Look for Damage

While you’re cleaning, look for signs of weather, rust, or other damage that can cause water to run down the side of your home. Missing fasteners, cracks and holes, water stains, and standing water are some of the most common signs that your gutters need to be repaired or replaced.

4. Rinse Out the Gutters

guttersOnce you’ve removed the bulk of the debris, use a long garden hose to rinse small pieces and finer particles. Turn the nozzle to a powerful flow and spray toward a downspout, taking care not to shoot water underneath the shingles.

5. Check the Downspouts

Flushing the gutters out also allows you to ensure the downspouts are working. As you’re spraying, watch the spouts to see if water comes out. If not, you likely have a blockage somewhere in the line, which may require the services of a professional with specialized tools.
