Whether you've had a DUI in the past or just want to monitor your drinking better, it's important to know the signs of inebriation. Periodically checking in with yourself and gauging your current state could mean the difference between drunk driving and getting home safely and getting behind the wheel drunk. Look for the following indicators that you shouldn’t get on the road.

How to Tell If You’re Too Drunk to Drive

1. Slurred Speech

Drinking increases the amount of the neurotransmitter GABA in your system, and too much GABA prevents the brain from processing the information it’s sending and receiving. As a result, your speech will be slow and unsteady. If you’re slurring words or need to take time to think before saying something, don't drive.

2. Lack of Balance

duiAlcohol impairs the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance and coordination. When you've had too much to drink, you’ll feel lightheaded and have trouble accurately judging distances.

Both of these factors can make a person stumble, so if you've reached this point of intoxication, it's time to call a cab. Balance is one of the first indicators tested during a DUI field sobriety test.

3. Double Vision

The cerebellum also controls eye movement and coordination. Too much alcohol can trigger rapid or abnormal eye movement and weakened eye coordination, resulting in double vision. If you’re drinking and experiencing any vision issues, including seeing double, don’t get behind the wheel.
