When finalizing a T-shirt design, it should provide a legible and attractive graphic that promotes your business. To ensure you get the right message across, follow these typography tips.

Do:

Keep it simple.

To keep your T-shirt design from looking cluttered, don’t use more than two or three different typefaces, and make sure they complement one another. If you’re striving for a dynamic look that includes lots of contrast, experiment with different sizes and styles, like bold and italic, as opposed to different fonts.

Review the design while the shirt is worn.

Digital screens won’t provide an accurate representation of your design. To ensure you’ve chosen the right size and location, see what it looks like on a T-shirt being worn. Request a physical proof from the print shop before proceeding with the entire order, then ask multiple people to try it on, so you can see where the text falls on the body.

Don’t:

Overlook a font fail.

To avoid including a “font fail” in the final design, show the text to several people who are not associated with your brand, and see if they interpret it correctly.

Opt for something trendy.

If you’re not sure what constitutes a “trendy” font, take a quick look at the top-selling decor on Etsy. The most popular products will contain some of the trendiest fonts. While these typefaces certainly have aesthetic appeal, they’re going to look dated in a few years. Instead, select timeless fonts for optimal longevity.
