If you’ve recently bought undeveloped land, you need to work with trained site preparation professionals before you can start building on the parcel. By performing the following tasks, land clearing technicians will ensure the ground is sturdy and safe to build on while also unearthing potential issues so you can alter plans accordingly.

3 Important Steps in Site Preparation

1. Clear the Land

Site preparation specialists will remove trees, boulders, and other obstacles. This way, building contractors will have enough room to work on the lot.

Technicians use various equipment for land clearing, including tree shears, stump grinders, and deck mowers to remove vegetation. Consider how the plants affect the ecosystem when determining how to alter the natural landscape. Bulldozers are used to demolish existing structures and dump trucks haul away the debris.

2. Excavate

site preparationClearing the land also gives technicians access to the ground to perform excavation. The excavating crew will dig trenches for water pipes, sewer lines, and other utilities that will run to the site.

If the planned structures will have basements, excavating contractors will need to dig out space for the foundations. Bulldozers, backhoe loaders with adjustable shovels, and excavators are used to move the soil.

3. Grade the Surface

After portions of the lot are excavated, the displaced dirt will be used to grade the surrounding area. This means the soil is compacted to create a solid, sturdy surface for building and hardscape construction.

The ground is graded with slopes to help water drain away from the construction. This will prevent runoff from settling at the base of buildings and damaging the foundations. Motor graders have adjustable blades to flatten the earth.
