If your floors are covered with carpet, you know it adds comfort, color, and style to the home. Avoiding stains helps the fabric flooring last longer and enhances the enjoyment of the living space. Here are a few tips to keep it stain-free and looking its best.

3 Ways to Reduce the Chances of Staining Your Carpet

1. Apply Stain Protection

Protecting your flooring with a stain repellent treatment lessens the potential for fabric damage from spills. If your carpet is new, it may have been pre-treated at the factory with a stain protectant. If not, use do-it-yourself products or contact a carpet professional. Plastic rug runners and throw rugs are other options for avoiding stains in high-traffic areas.

2. Vacuum Frequently

carpet-Lahaina-HIVacuuming often removes debris and dirt particles that may not be visible. These particles rub against the fabric’s fibers, and if left undisturbed over a long period, they cause permanent dark spots. Vacuum once a week or more to keep your floor looking fresh longer. For a thorough cleaning, move throw rugs or furniture beforehand.

3. Treat Accidents Immediately

If you address a spill quickly, you’re more likely to avoid stains setting in. Dab the spot with a clean paper towel, cloth, or sponge to soak up moisture. Don’t scrub it—doing so damages the material and spreads the stain.

To stop stains from fresh pet urine, soak up all the moisture you can with layered paper towels covered by layered newspaper. Place a weighted item on the pile for about a minute, then discard the papers. Rinse the soiled area with cool, clean water, and pat it dry.

To stop a red wine stain, dilute it with club soda and blot it with a clean, white cloth or paper towel. Cover the wet spot liberally with salt, which drains the wine. Once the spot is dry, vacuum it well. For stubborn stains, contact a professional cleaning service.
