Birds are prey animals, so they tend to hide their symptoms of sickness to avoid appearing weak or like they’d make an easy meal. That’s why it’s vital to watch for signs of illness in your pet bird so that you can take them to the veterinary hospital if necessary. Here are some indicators of sickness.

How to Tell if Your Bird Is Ill

1. General Body Language

If your bird is huddled, sitting low on the perch, or losing their balance and falling off, they could be feeling sick. If you notice changes in their behavior or body language, such as lethargy, changes in personality (more aggressive or submissive than normal), or increased sleeping, these are also indicators of ill health.

2. Head Appearance

Look for redness or loss of feathers around their eyes. Also, see if there’s any discharge from their eyes or nares.

An overgrown, flaky, or discolored beak can also indicate problems. If you notice any swelling, take them to the veterinary hospital immediately.

3. Skin & Feather Appearance

4. Changes in Breathing

Take your bird to the veterinary hospital immediately if they have labored breathing or start breathing through an open beak rather than their nares.

Also, watch for heavy breathing after exercise or an inability to exercise at all. If your bird begins sneezing or making a clicking sound when they breathe, they may be sick.
