If your child has had cavities in the past, or you’re simply concerned about their oral health and dental care, paying attention to what they drink is crucial. Sugary beverages can lead to tooth decay and gum disease, while some drinks can protect their smile. Here’s everything you need to know.

Best Drinks for Your Child’s Teeth

Milk is an excellent option for kids, especially because they often like the taste. It contains both protein and calcium, fortifying their tooth enamel—the protective layer that keeps their smile white and healthy. If your child doesn’t like the taste of plain milk, put sugar free chocolate or vanilla essence in it. For kids that are lactose intolerant, buy unsweetened oat or soy milk that contains calcium. Water is also a good choice because it doesn’t contain sugar, so it won’t lead to tooth erosion or decay.

Drinks Your Kids Should Avoid

dental careWhile fruit juice contains plenty of nutrients, it can be harmful to your children’s teeth. The sugar can erode their enamel, and plaque will be more likely to form, leading to cavities and gingivitis. Limit juice consumption by only letting them drink it during meals. Also, encourage them to eat whole fruits rather than consume juice, as they’re better for the teeth.

Soda should be avoided altogether. In addition to containing sugar, the carbonation makes it acidic which is damaging to teeth.  Finally, sports drinks should be avoided. They contain a lot of sugar, and citric acid which can damage tooth enamel.
