For children, using an approved safety seat reduces the risk of experiencing a severe car accident injury by as much as 82 percent. As in every other state, Texas has laws mandating and regulating child safety seats. The guide below looks at some of the most pertinent information for parents to know.

Types

Children under the age of one must ride in a rear-facing seat in the back of the vehicle.

Once they've outgrown this seat, they can switch to a front-facing one—though it should still be placed in the back of the car. They should use this seat until they reach the height or weight limits specified by the manufacturer. The weight limit is usually 40 lbs.

After this point, they can move on to a booster seat. When the child outgrows the booster, they can utilize the adult seat belt but should continue to ride in the back seat until at least age 13 for maximum safety in case of a car accident.

Buying

car accidentAlways buy car and booster seats new. Purchasing a used seat might mean that the product is missing key safety features, is damaged, or is worn beyond a safe point. Be sure the seat includes step-by-step installation and usage directions.

Read these directions carefully and store them in an easily accessible place. Upon purchasing, fill out and send in the registration card so you can stay informed of any safety issues and recalls should they arise.

Fitting

Achieving a secure fit with the belt will keep your child restrained in the event of an accident. However, you don't want it to be so tight that it is restrictive and painful. You shouldn't be able to move the seat side to side or front to back more than one inch when pulled. The strap over the child should be just tight enough that you can't pinch any of the webbing across the child's shoulder or waist.
