As a parent, you strive to maintain all aspects of your child’s health, including their dental health. If your child complains of a toothache, you may wonder what you can do. Here’s what children’s dentists want you to know about this common concern.

4 Common Questions About Children’s Toothaches

What causes a child’s toothache?

The most common causes of a child’s toothache include tooth decay, gum disease, a dental abscess, a broken or cracked tooth, new teeth coming in, or hard food getting stuck between teeth. Painful teeth may also indicate a sinus infection, mouth sore, or earache.

What should I look for when my child complains of a toothache?

After putting on medical gloves and rinsing your child’s mouth with warm water, examine their mouth for cracks; yellow-brown spots; tender, red gums; or a pimple or swelling around the tooth, which may indicate a dental abscess.

If possible, ask your child to point to the painful area, so you know where to focus your attention. Also, keep an eye out for signs of infection, such as pus or red streaks around the painful area; swelling in the mouth or on the face; and fever.

How can I relieve my child’s discomfort?

Gently floss your child’s teeth to dislodge any stuck food that may be causing pain. Next, apply a cold pack or ice wrapped in a cloth to your child’s jaw for 10 to 20 minutes.

You can also rinse your child’s mouth with one teaspoon of salt in eight fluid ounces of water every two hours.

Avoid giving your child extremely hot, cold, or sweet foods or drinks, as they can worsen the pain.

When should I seek professional help?

Contact a children’s dentist if your child’s pain doesn’t go away within 24 hours. You should also seek professional help if you notice cracks on your child’s teeth or signs of infection, tooth decay, or gum disease.
