While many factors can contribute to a good night’s sleep, a solid mattress is fundamental. Memory foam mattresses have revolutionized sleep, providing millions with restful, rejuvenating shuteye. If you’re considering upgrading your bed, here’s what you should know about this option.

A Guide to Memory Foam Mattresses

What is memory foam made of?

Memory foam is made of a synthetic polyurethane material mixed with special chemicals. It’s unique because it can support pressure with even distribution across the entire surface, and it can regain its shape after compression. It also becomes more pliable with warmth, which is advantageous for sleeping because the body emits heat.

Who invented memory foam technology?

NASA scientists in the 1970s initially developed memory foam technology to cushion astronauts from the tremendous pressure of g-forces on the body during liftoff. Later, the Swedish foam-producing company Fagerdala® began experimenting with the flexible, adaptable visco-elastic foam to adapt it for the general population.

In 1991, Fagerdala introduced its first mattress of this type. A year later, Tempur-Pedic® released its now-famous version.

Does it cure back pain?

For people with back pain and similar problems, removing pressure points is important for a comfortable sleep. Memory foam provides a surface that sufficiently supports the spine and relieves pressure points.

Do they need a box spring?

Like other models, memory foam mattresses need a box spring or slatted platform to provide a stable surface. If you prefer a slatted platform, ensure the gaps between slats are no more than a few inches wide. You may also consider drilling holes in the surface of a wooden platform to promote airflow.

Having your bed on a raised platform can extend mattress longevity and reduce the risk of damage. Some manufacturers require a mattress to be placed on a raised surface to preserve the warranty.
