When a loved one enters hospice care, planning the first visit can be challenging. Whether it’s a friend, partner, or family member, schedule your visit as soon as possible so that you have the opportunity to spend precious time together. Here’s what you should know.

A Guide to Visiting Someone in Hospice Care

What should I bring?

Ask the hospice staff if there are special items that your loved one has requested. Depending on the situation, you might want to bring favorite snacks or sweets, blankets and pillows, or photo albums and cherished mementos. If you’re planning multiple visits, consider bringing different items each time.

Are there subjects I should avoid?

hospice careAllow the loved one to talk about whatever they want. Be patient while listening to them speak.

No topic is off-limits if your loved one wants to discuss it, whether it’s something simple, such as a soup recipe, or a more emotional subject, including happy memories, last wishes, or life advice. Try to avoid talking about their health unless they want to.

Should I bring my children?

Feel free to bring your children as long as it is safe to do so. If the loved one can transmit disease, this may not be ideal.

However, if the risk is low and you stay in the room to ensure they do not touch medical equipment, your kids can make the visit even more special. Individuals in hospice frequently want to see their grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other young family members.

What health precautions should I take?

Reschedule the visit if you’re ill. You may want to have your temperature taken before you see your loved one to ensure you’re healthy and take extra steps to boost your immune system, such as getting plenty of sleep. Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently when you visit, and follow all hospice care staff instructions, such as wearing a mask.
