Door locks are your home’s first line of defense against intruders. Carefully inspect yours if there’s been burglar activity in the area. Recognizing locks that have been tampered with can help you take precautions to protect your family—such as by scheduling lock repairs or replacements.

What Indicates a Tampered Lock?

1. Deep Scratches

It’s normal for exterior locks to collect scratches over the years. However, deeper marks around the keyhole or on the plate suggest a lock-picking tool or screwdriver was used to try to break in. These lines will extend inside the keyhole.

Burglars also try a technique called bumping. They file down the teeth of a key, jam it into the lock, and hammer it until the lock tumblers fall into place. Look for hammer-marks around the lock or fresh metal flakes near the scratches.

2. The Lock Won’t Work

lock repairsIs the lock suddenly stiff, loose, or won’t fully align with the strike plate? It can be a sign a crafty burglar attempted to enter your home. A locksmith can perform lock repairs, though you may want to upgrade instead. Deadbolt locks use a thick bolt that’s difficult to bypass. They are installed above the standard lock and handle. Digital-mechanical hybrid bolts are also popular because they use electronic systems rather than tumblers and pins to activate the lock.

3. Warped Door Jamb

Sometimes, the door, not the lock, holds the evidence of a break-in attempt. Burglars will attempt to bypass a deadbolt or standard lock with a crowbar by wedging it between the door and jamb. You’ll notice areas around the locking mechanism are warped or splintered. The paint may also be scratched. Have a locksmith check that the locks aren’t damaged and hire a carpenter to repair the jamb.
