No home is complete without the correct windows, and they can serve many functional and aesthetic purposes. There are many styles and materials available, and understanding your options can make the selection process easier. Below are the most popular types and what makes them unique.

5 Popular Window Types

1. Single-Hung & Double-Hung

Single-hung and double-hung products are the most recognizable. They have two sashes, panes, and framing panels that can move up or down to open the window. Small single-hung options offer privacy and ventilation in a bathroom, while a three-set of large double-hung installations can wash a living area in natural light.

2. Bay

windows-durhamA bay design bumps out from a room in an angular or half-circle shape. It can be outfitted with almost any window type and is used to capture views or increase square footage. Consider adding a large, multi-floor bay design to the front of a home or a small half-hexagon bump-out in the breakfast nook.

3. Slider

Slider products move a single pane horizontally on a track to open and close. They come in many shapes and sizes, and the limited moving parts make them less likely to be damaged. Add them to a basement or a child's room, and secure the tracking with locks for safety.

4. Awning & Casement

Awning designs are ideal for ventilation. Two hinges attached to the top of the frame allow you to swing the window up and open. Place them along the top edge in a sunroom or master bath to allow cool breezes into your home. You can also create a border around a picture or double-hung windows to create an interesting design.

Casement windows work similarly, though they use a handle and crack system rather than hinges. They can be mounted to open on any side and can swing outwards so that they don’t take up room inside the home.

5. Picture

A picture window features a single, large pane of glass that is enclosed in a frame. They capture the best views and are often placed in large living rooms or master bathrooms overlooking a scenic vista. Homeowners use them with smaller sliding or awning windows to allow some cool air since the picture window can’t open.
