4 Tips for Storing an Air Conditioner During the Winter, Woodland Park, New Jersey

Although the weather is getting cooler, now is the perfect time to handle some residential HVAC maintenance. To ensure your American Standard® system will be ready for you next spring, take the following steps to store it properly.

How to Prepare an AC for Winter

1. Look for Damage

Assess your outdoor unit for clear signs of problems, such as dents or pest infestations. Pooling water near the base that's not caused by precipitation could also indicate blocked drain tube channels or leaking refrigerant. In this case, contact a residential HVAC technician to perform a thorough inspection and make repairs.

2. Clean the Unit

Turn off the AC with the thermostat, and then go to the electric circuit box and shut off power to the unit. Next, add a few drops of mild dish soap to a bucket of warm water. Lift the AC cover off and use a moist rag to remove dirt and dust from the inside. Wipe the exterior of the casing, let it sit outside in the sun, and don't replace it until it's completely dry.

residential HVACAlso, have an American Standard technician clean the interior of the unit once a year. They'll know how to remove built-up contaminants, such as leaves and pollen, without damaging the system.

3. Swap the Filter

It may seem smart to let the current AC filter sit in the system until you need it again in the spring. However, it's best to switch this part before storing the residential HVAC unit to protect it from dust, hair, and dander.

4. Cover the Unit

Many air conditioner parts rust and corrode when continually exposed to snow, ice, and wind, so protect your system by using an AC cover over the winter.

Never wrap the unit with plastic, as it may become moldy from trapped moisture. Some pre-made covers feature tie-down draw straps while others have elastic at the bottom. Attach the cover for the most secure fit and check that it's still tightly installed throughout the winter to protect the system.
