When it comes to landscaping materials, river rocks are becoming quite the popular trend because of the versatility they offer. With several sizes and colors to choose from, river rocks will elevate the look of your home’s exterior with minimal effort. Utilize the following four ideas to incorporate them in your landscaping plans.

How to Use River Rocks Outside Your Home

1. Construct a Rock Wall

If you’re looking for a way to give more structure to your landscaping, a rock wall can provide the aesthetics and stability you need. Constructed using two layers of galvanized steel wire and a foundation, the designated space between the layers can be filled with rocks. This installation will provide erosion control and privacy while also serving as a focal point for your landscaping.

2. Fill Negative Space

Too much color or varying patterns can get lost in a landscaping project, but separating these items with a patch of river rocks will provide the muted contrast needed to tie the overall look together.

3. Replace Mulch

While mulch and pea gravel are common fillers for plant beds, river rocks are a durable and aesthetically pleasing option. While these stones do hold heat more than other materials, they pair well with lush green plants like succulents and sturdy flowers like marigolds. They also help hold in moisture, allowing you to water your plants less than you would with typical mulch.

4. Create a Pathway

Designing a pathway is another creative way to incorporate river rocks into your landscaping project. Using flower bed siding, larger stones, bricks, or pavers, simply outline the shape you want for your pathway.

Next, fill in the walkway with river rocks in your favorite colors. You can make your path more visually interesting by using different colors of rocks or winding it through the yard.
