Auto insurance companies offer different rates for different drivers. Naturally, high-risk drivers face increased premiums, since providers are putting more on the line to insure them. While there are several conditions that can qualify you as high-risk, the good news is that this designation is temporary. Here’s how long each high-risk circumstance will stay with you.

New Driver or No Prior Insurance

If you’ve never had auto insurance before or let your policy lapse, you’ll be considered high-risk for six continuous months. During this time, you’ll pay higher premiums, but as long as your driving record is free of citations and accidents, your status will be reassessed.

If you allowed your plan to lapse, you’ll face surcharges for the time when you weren’t insured. To lower your rates and avoid reinstating the penalty, stick with the same plan for six full months.

Multiple Tickets

auto insurance Lorain OHSeveral traffic violations can get you categorized as a high-risk driver. Whether you’ve gotten speeding tickets or caused minor accidents, most traffic incidents will stay on record for three years.

During this time, you’ll face higher premiums even if the violation has expired. To be eligible for lower rates with your current carrier, you’ll have to wait three full years and for the renewal of your policy. You can, however, switch carriers as soon as the violation expires to avoid surcharges.

Major Violations

Serious traffic violations, including charges of driving under the influence (DUI) will carry consequences that last up to five years. A few select carriers may lift surcharges for major violations after a three-year period, however.

Keep in mind that the state will also be notified of your insurance status after a major violation. Your insurer must fill out an SR-22, which is a special form that notifies the government that you’re insured. They’ll also need to complete this form if you were ever caught driving uninsured.
