Whether you’ve been planning a pool renovation for a while or are having one installed for the first time, you’ll have to consider the depth. Although it may not seem as fun as choosing the tiles or the shape, the depth directly impacts how you and your family will be using the pool. If you’re unsure where to start in the process, consider the following factors.

How to Determine the Right Pool Depth

1. Purpose

If this is your first pool, make a list of how you plan to spend time in it. If this is a pool renovation, think about what has and hasn’t worked for you. If you’re more likely to leisurely paddle, toss beach balls, or just splash around, you don’t necessarily need more than five feet.

However, if you’d like to dive in or do a few cannonballs, you’ll need at least eight feet. For those who want to practice their swimming strokes, focus on the shape of the pool instead. A rectangular one that’s about three and a half to four feet deep will suffice.

2. Household

Consider the members of your family; specifically, each person’s height. Households with significant height differences often benefit from a multi-depth pool.

If you have young children, consider a separate wading pool about two to three feet deep.

3. Maintenance

Depth also impacts maintenance. When it comes to cleaning, pool chemical balancing, and other forms of upkeep, deeper pools will require more time and effort than their shallower counterparts. If professionals deal with the maintenance, a pool that needs less work will save you a significant amount of money.
