While they are sometimes conflated, patios and decks are different structures. Both home improvement projects offer a new dimension to a property, but knowing each better will help you decide which is more appropriate for your lifestyle and needs. Here’s a closer look at each structure.

What Is a Deck?

A deck is an elevated area, typically made of wood, that extends outward from a house. They can be built on land of any grade, so it’s still possible if there’s a slope. Decks have no covering, so it exists outdoors in the open air. Since they’re elevated, decks often provide pleasant views, and also serve as ideal gathering spaces for friends and family.

Depending on your municipality, a deck is a home improvement project that may require a building permit. Unless you choose a composite wood, decks require a fair amount of maintenance, including power washing to remove grime, as well as repainting to keep up the gorgeous look. One of the greatest virtues of a deck is that it will substantially elevate the value of the property since it’s such a coveted element.

What Is a Patio?

home improvementA patio is a paved space that can extend out from the home or exist apart from it. Typically, they have no “roof,” but sometimes a homeowner will add a pergola. Patios are often made with concrete, though there are other options such as stone. Because there’s no wood involved, the price point is a little lower than a deck.

Patios don’t require much maintenance since concrete is so durable. The soil may need occasional treatment to avoid cracking in cold weather. Since patios don’t rise from the ground, they offer a sense of coziness and privacy. They are excellent gathering places for a family BBQ or a cocktail hour. While most municipalities don’t mandate permits to build patios, a few do, so it’s always worth checking.
