When your car starts making unusual noises, you might require auto repair. If the sounds appear when you accelerate, there might be an issue with one of the engine belts. Alternatively, if squeaks happen while braking, the malfunction may be in the brake system. Use the following guide to learn more about these issues.

What Causes Squeaky Car Brakes & Belts?

1. Wear & Tear

Age affects both brakes and engine belts. The brake pads, which clamp on to the rotors and create friction, help halt the vehicle. They wear down over time, decreasing the resistance. Some pads have wear indicators, steel clips that squeak when they come in contact with the rotor, to alert drivers to dangerous wear.

The serpentine belt—a continuous belt in the engine that drives multiple devices, including the alternator and the water pump—has grooves that align and create friction with various pulleys. With time, the belt may develop cracks, causing it to snap and create noise.

2. Improper Tension on the Engine Belt

Typically, engine belt tension is created by a tensioner, a spring-loaded arm with pulleys. The tensioner applies the appropriate amount of force on the belt to ensure the engine runs smoothly.

With too little tension, the belt lacks the friction required to move the pulleys. In both cases, the engine belt can slip and create a pesky squealing sound.

3. Glazed Brake Pads & Rotors

When brake calipers slip, the pad remains in contact with the rotor, leading to excessive friction and heat. Eventually, the brake pads crystallize and become glazed over.

The glazing eventually reaches the rotor and the bases of the pads, connecting the hardened surfaces and creating noises. Additionally, glazing diminishes friction and braking power, leading to potentially dangerous situations.
