Finding a mouse inside your home is alarming. Not only are they destructive, but they also create unsanitary conditions throughout the home. While there are several ways to remove mice, proper pest control begins with prevention. Below are a few strategies to help you keep mice out of your home.

3 Tips to Prevent Mice From Entering Your House

1. Seal Entry Points

Mice can enter in a variety of ways, many of which are challenging to notice right away. Prevent access by sealing any cracks or holes that you find around the exterior of the home.

Use caulk or steel wool to close off areas where utilities and pipes enter the house, such as the gas line beneath your oven or the water connection behind your fridge. Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around your foundation, doorways, and windows to further protect the home.

2. Clean Food Sources

Like all rodents, mice are constantly looking for food. Attractive food sources for mice may include crumbs on the kitchen floor, dirty dishes in the sink, and open containers in the pantry.

3. Remove Shelter

Mice love to hide in woodpiles, shrubs, weeds, and even old vehicles, so you should remove these potential homes. Once mice set up in your yard, it's only a matter of time before they'll enter your house looking for food and warmth, especially when the weather changes.

Pest control specialists recommend trimming your hedges and shrubs so that they are a few feet from your walls. Store woodpiles at least 20 feet away, and remove unused objects from the yard, if possible.
