Many puppies to nip and bite. Even though this is normal behavior, it should be controlled as early as possible so that it doesn’t become a habit as your pup gets older. While you should enroll your dog in puppy training, here’s what you can do at home to discourage them from nipping.

Why Do Puppies Bite?

Puppies spend much of their time playing, chewing, and investigating their surroundings, and most of these activities involve their mouths. When they begin teething, a process that lasts 2-3 months, chewing curbs some of the discomfort and pain. Some dog breeds, such as labradors and border collies, are more inclined to nipping.

How Can You Stop It?

puppy trainingRemember to always avoid physical punishment when puppy training. This will not help your dog stop biting any faster and can encourage aggressive behavior as they grow older.

Instead, work with them in a positive way. Invest in some high-quality chew toys that you can redirect them to when they start to nip or bite.

If your puppy starts to bite you, remove yourself in a calm manner until they stop. Return in a few seconds and praise them if they don’t bite you again. This puppy training technique will show your dog that nipping and biting lead to no playtime, while friendly behavior leads to more fun.

After your furry friend has received their vaccinations and has been approved by a veterinarian, enroll them in professional puppy training classes to help them grow into a well-behaved dog.
