Before you turn on your furnace this fall, you’ll need to ensure it’s functioning correctly. A bit of preventative furnace maintenance can prevent issues ranging from inefficiency to breakdowns and gas leaks. Below are four steps to take before firing up your gas-powered HVAC system.

1. Perform a Thorough Inspection 

Check the ducts for cracks and ensure the drainage tubes and venting pipes are securely connected. Look for debris inside the combustion chamber or buildup in the floor vents. Take note of any unusual scents as well. A sulfurous odor could indicate a gas leak. In this case, don’t light the pilot light or turn on the system. Instead, call an HVAC contractor immediately. If there’s no indication of a gas leak, turn the furnace on to check the circuits, then turn it off again.

2. Check the Carbon Monoxide Detector 

Gas-powered furnaces produce heat via a combustion process, which produces carbon monoxide. This invisible, tasteless, and odorless gas is extremely toxic. Inhaling a moderate amount may cause symptoms such as fatigue, headache, and confusion while inhaling a significant amount can be fatal. All homes should have working carbon monoxide detectors, but it’s particularly crucial if you have gas-powered appliances. Make sure the detector is functioning and ask your HVAC contractor if you’re unsure. 

3. Replace the Filter 

The air filter traps dust, dirt, and other particles that circulate in the air, preventing them from getting into the furnace, where they can accumulate and impede its function or damage components. Clogged filters impede air circulation, requiring the heater to work harder to do its job. A dirty filter can also decrease indoor air quality. Filters should generally be cleaned monthly and changed at the beginning of autumn, then every two or three months during the heating season. 

4. Conduct Light Cleaning 

Dirt, dust, and other debris can also accumulate in other parts of the furnace. You can begin cleaning the unit by removing the panels on the blower, located next to the air filter, and wiping it down. Then, replace the cover and move on to the ducts. Use the hose of your vacuum cleaner to vacuum any dust and debris. Finally, clean the flame sensor by unscrewing it and wiping it down with a soft cloth.
