If you have a dental cavity, your dentist will most likely recommend a filling. This process involves removing the decayed portion of the tooth and replacing it with durable materials. However, this method is only useful for minor problems. For larger cavities, inlays or onlays are preferred.

What Are Inlays & Onlays?

In the technical sense, a dental inlay is the same as a filling. However, rather than filling the hole with either a composite or amalgam material, an inlay is a solid piece specially made to mimic the shape of your existing tooth. Typically made in a lab from ceramic or gold, it fits precisely into the space left behind by cavity removal.

dentistAn inlay is only used to fill a cavity in the center of the tooth. If the decay extends to the edges, the dentist must decide whether the tooth can be saved with an onlay, or if it needs a crown, or to be removed and replaced with an implant.

An onlay is similar to an inlay in that it’s a solid piece made to replace extracted dental material. However, it covers the cusp of the tooth in addition to the portion that has been drilled. It only provides partial coverage, unlike a dental crown, which covers the entire structure.

Advantages of Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays are used when the decayed portion of the tooth is too large for a typical filling, but not extensive enough to require a full-coverage crown. They also last longer than fillings and are less likely to expand and contract with temperature changes & become loose.

Many dentists prefer onlays to crowns when possible because they require removing less of the natural tooth. However, if the decay has spread to cover the entire biting surface, crowns are more effective.
