Many people are unhappy with their smiles due to discoloration, misshapen or overcrowded teeth, chips, or cracks. If you have these concerns, your dentist may be able to help with a cosmetic dentistry procedure such as tooth bonding. If you’ve never heard of dental bonding, learn about the basics below.

What Is Bonding?

Dental bonding involves applying composite resin to the tooth’s surface to repair it. It is a cosmetic dentistry technique dentists use to conceal discoloration and fix issues such as chips, decay, or fractures. Some dentists use it as an alternative to amalgam fillings or to protect roots exposed by receding gums. While veneers require custom molds and multiple appointments, dentists can complete bonding in one sitting. It is also typically less expensive than veneers. With proper care, bonding can last for several years.

What Should You Expect From the Procedure?

dentistThis is a relatively quick and straightforward procedure that typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes. Unless the dentist has to work close to a tooth nerve, they may not need to use anesthesia. The dentist will consult with you to find the best resin color to match your teeth. Then, they’ll gently etch the tooth to create a rough surface that can easily bond with the resin. The dentist will then apply a liquid bonding agent before adding the resin. They’ll shape the pliable resin to make the tooth appear natural and harden it with a UV light or laser. Finally, they will polish the resin.

What Can You Expect After Bonding?

After bonding, you’ll want to exercise the same oral care as you would with your other teeth. Brush at least twice a day for two minutes and floss at least once a day. Because bonded teeth can chip, you should avoid chewing your fingernails or chewing ice and be cautious when biting into hard foods. Because they are not entirely as stain-resistant as veneers or crowns, you may want to limit beverages like tea, coffee, and red wine, which can cause discoloration. It’s particularly important to avoid such foods in the first 48 hours after your procedure when the tooth is most vulnerable to staining. You should call your dentist immediately if the resin feels sharp, chips, or falls out.
