Your HVAC system is responsible for providing heat and cool air to your home, but it requires maintenance and care to continue running efficiently. There are a few components in your system that require extra attention to avoid malfunctions and poor operation. This guide points out a few of these components.

What Should You Watch for in Your HVAC System?

1. Filter

You should check your filter once a month all year round because a dirty filter can cause a number of different problems with your HVAC system. A filter that’s clogged with dust, pet hair, and allergens will result in debris getting pushed back out into your home, causing respiratory problems and allergic reactions. Additionally, the dirty filter will interfere with airflow, forcing your system to work harder. This means the unit will use more energy to provide the same level of comfort.

2. Evaporator Coils

You have two evaporator coils in your system with one located in the outdoor condenser. The condenser is responsible for cooling the air before it’s sent into the home, but a dirty evaporator coil can interfere with this process. As dirt, leaves, and other types of debris get into the condenser unit and clog the coil, the system will become overworked. It will eventually break down unless the coil is cleaned by a professional. The coil inside your furnace can also become dirty over time, so it should be cleaned by a professional contractor at the start of cooler weather.

3. Thermostat

HVACIt’s not uncommon to think there’s something wrong with the air conditioning or heating systems only to find out that the thermostat is actually the problem. Common reasons your system may not be operating properly include a miscalibrated thermostat, a dead battery, or an old thermostat that just doesn’t work properly anymore. If you check your thermostat first, you can usually fix a problem without taking on bigger and unnecessary repairs.

4. Fuses

If you blow a fuse or trip a circuit breaker, each time your cooling or heating system engages, you may have a problem with airflow. As previously mentioned, dirty filters and clogged coils can reduce airflow, but if they are too restricted, they can force the system’s blower to work harder. This will force the unit to use more energy and draw more electricity than your electrical system can handle. Your contractor can determine the cause of the overload, so you can have it safely repaired.
