Many people use natural, washed stone and manufactured bricks as pavers for hardscaping projects. Commonly referred to as cobblestone, the materials add aesthetic appeal and durability to driveways, patios, and walkways. Below, learn how to maintain your cobblestone installations.

3 Upkeep Tips for Cobblestone

1. Sweep & Hose Down the Surfaces

With a long-handled brush, regularly sweep the washed stone or brick pavers. This will remove dirt before it can become wet and turn into mud. Mud hardens when it dries, which can leave stains and marks on the surfaces. To remove stuck-on grime, scrub the hardscapes with a cleaning solution formulated for stone or brick and then rinse it off with a garden hose. You can also invest in professional power washing.

2. Apply a Sealer

If you use a water-based sealer, it will need to be reapplied every three to five years. Acrylic sealers can also add a glossy sheen to the surface and need to be reapplied every two to three years.

3. Pull Weeds & Touch Up Mortar

The grass in between pavers helps secure the washed stones or bricks in place. Routinely examine the hardscape for weeds growing between the pavers. Pull the vegetation before the roots push against the stones and bricks and cause them to shift or crack. If there is mortar between the pavers, look for cracks in the material. Apply fresh mortar before the pavers become loose.
