Proper dental care is best instilled at a young age to establish healthy habits for life. While teaching your child to brush, you may notice they make the following mistakes. Learn how to spot them and what to do instead to improve your child’s oral health.

3 Harmful Brushing Habits to Discourage in Children

1. Brushing Too Hard

Brushing teeth too hard can damage their enamel and lead to bigger dental concerns in the future. This is common among children who like to get the job done as quickly as possible and think brushing harder is the way to do it. Teach your child to use gentle, circular motions with their toothbrush at an angle, which will avoid too much pressure.

2. Using the Incorrect Toothbrush

Most dentists will also recommend a toothbrush with soft bristles. Using one with firm bristles can damage tooth enamel and gums.

3. Brushing Too Often

If your child brushes their teeth more than three times a day, it can damage their enamel and push back their gums, which can lead to sensitivity. If you notice the bristles of your child’s toothbrush are frayed or worn down, they may be brushing too frequently. Explain that they only need to brush two times a day to keep their teeth healthy.
