When the area where you live is prone to fierce storms, you're probably used to preparing for rain, hail, snow, and even lightning strikes. However, even the best window installation may not protect your windows from the effects of high winds. To prevent damage and injury, use the guide below to plan accordingly before the next windstorm.

4 Ways to Keep Strong Winds from Damaging Your Windows

1. Install Shutters

Whether you prefer accordion-style or roll-ups, shutters have long been known as effective shields for windows during storms. They're excellent at absorbing impact and blocking both wind and precipitation. If they weren't included with your window installation, consider asking a general contractor to attach them.

Alternatively, cut sheets of plywood big enough to screw each end about six to eight inches beyond either side of the windows. The plywood can provide the same function as the shutters while being easier to remove after the storm has passed.

2. Keep Them Closed

Some homeowners believe that keeping them slightly open will equalize the low pressure brought by storms, preventing the glass from shattering. However, the pressure equalizes regardless of whether your window is open, so doing so will let precipitation, wind, and debris into your home.

3. Use Resistant Materials

Strong winds can cause indirect damage by directing objects toward your windows. To keep them from breaking glass, include hurricane film and impact-resistant glass in your window installation. These materials can do what duct tape spread across your windows in the shape of an “X” cannot—they hold the glass together despite pressure and impact.

These features also improve insulation, block UV rays, deter burglars, and raise the overall value of your home.

4. Clean Up Outside

Although impact-resistant materials are effective, they aren't guaranteed to work in every storm, especially if they've become worn out or damaged. To lower the odds that debris will hit your windows, remove any objects from your property that strong winds could pick up and carry toward your home, including items as small as sticks, rocks, umbrellas, and children's toys. Large objects include barbecue grills, trampolines, outdoor furniture, and dead or decaying tree branches that could snap off.
