When you accidentally drop jewelry down the drain, you might worry you’ve lost the piece for good. Fortunately, there are several ways to retrieve rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings without necessarily needing to call for professional drain cleaning or plumbing services. Here are a handful of tips on how to get jewelry out of different types of home drains.

How to Retrieve Jewelry From 3 Drain Types

1. Garbage Disposal

Prevent accidents and injuries by shutting off the power to the garbage disposal by flipping off the corresponding switch in your breaker box.

If you can see the piece of jewelry down the drain, use a wooden spoon or tongs with long handles to remove it. If this doesn’t work, try using a strong magnet to attract metal jewelry out of the disposal.

2. Bathroom or Kitchen Sink

plumbingFirst, shut off the main supply of water by turning off the hot and cold valves beneath your sink. If you don’t see your jewelry simply by looking down the drain, remove the P trap, or the U-shaped tube, beneath the sink.

Place a bucket underneath it to catch any water and debris in the plumbing pipe. Loosen the nuts, pull out the trap, and empty it into the bucket to retrieve your jewelry.

3. Shower

Remove the drain cover with a screwdriver and use a flexible retrieval tool from a hardware store to remove the jewelry. If this proves ineffective, suction the piece out with a wet-dry vacuum.

Insert the hose into the drain until it reaches the bottom, then remove it and open the tank to see if your jewelry is among the contents.
